Vision.

Ideal for graduate students or professionals in clinical and school psychology, education or other, related training programs or professions. This is a short-term training and practicum opportunity, with hands-on experience in selective mutism, and potential opportunities for further experience after camp, if interested.

Participation includes gold-standard selective mutism treatment training, 35-40+ hours of direct, clinical experience, and supervision provided by licensed clinical psychologists. This is a great opportunity for graduate students, professional counselors or therapists, and other mental health professionals who are interested in pediatric mental health care, treatment of anxiety disorders in children, and behavioral interventions.

Clinical Timeline.

The training experience coincides with the multi-phasic structure of the camp with associated time commitments, required training, and opportunities for 1:1 intervention. Camp will be hosted in Seattle in August, with training and intervention beginning in July.

Commitments Include:

  1. July 7th and 8th. Training on evidence-based treatment for selective mutism held in Seattle with in-person requirements and mock clinical work.

  2. July 18 to August 12th: In-person clinical lead-in sessions with campers/clients to prepare for camp week (to be scheduled separately based on clinical trainee and client availability)

  3. August 14th to August 18th, 8:30 to 4:00: CAMP WEEK!

Clinical Work.

Due to the nature of the intervention, our patient population is very specific for Brave Explorers Camp. BEC serves children, ages 4-12 (with some flexibility), with selective mutism (SM), and their families. While SM is the primary presenting issue for most of our patients, co-morbidities are commonplace, with ADHD, ASD, and generalized anxiety disorders often co-occurring.

Brave Explorers Camp is the primary program of Brave Seattle, PLLC, founded by Dr. Ward in Seattle and hosted with the assistance of her Brave Seattle team! While Dr. Ward and Brave Seattle’s team have individual practices, they coordinate in the summer to create Brave Explorers Camp, focusing on the treatment of children with selective mutism and social phobias.

Our program is founded upon the standard of excellence and care that was set by clinicians specializing in selective mutism who first held intensive treatment camps in the United States and have aided us in our clinical training; namely, Dr. Steven Kurtz, the founder of PCIT-SM and director of Mighty Mouth Camp, and, Dr. Carmen Lynas, the director of Adventure Camp in Chicago, IL, and a consultant to Brave Explorers Camp.

An Ideal Candidate for this Position:

  • Is a graduate-level clinician, professional such as SLPs, counselors, teachers, etc., or student, interested in treating and learning more about anxiety

  • Passionate and excited about supporting our campers moving toward greater bravery and well-being; this includes being willing to “be brave” yourself and getting comfortable being uncomfortable
